An open-plan living room is bought as a room, not as a seat. The buyer is fitting out a floor where the kitchen, the dining table and the seating all share one space, and the sofa group has to define the conversation zone without cutting the room in half. That changes the brief in a way a single recliner never does: a retail chain wants one or two configurations that still read as a full room in a large setting, a big-parcel e-commerce seller wants a set that survives being sold as cartons, and an apartment or project buyer wants a module count that repeats across dozens of identical units.

This page covers what buyers in this category decide first, how the layout and the motion mix are put together, and which models on our sectional line fit the brief.

Why an open-plan room is specified differently

Three things separate this from a small-room recliner brief.

The group is the floor plan. In a compact living room the sofa is pushed against a wall and the room is already defined by the walls. In an open plan there is often no wall to push against, so the corner, the return and the chaise are what separate the seating zone from the walkway to the kitchen. Get the return length wrong and the room reads as a corridor; get it right and the same room reads as two rooms. This is why buyers in this category fix the footprint first and the seat count second.

The back of the sofa is on show. A group that floats in the middle of a floor is seen from the entry, from the dining table and from the stair. Back panels, the finish where the cover wraps over the frame, and the colour of the outside arm all become visible surfaces rather than hidden construction. On a wall-backed sofa nobody checks them; here they decide whether the piece looks finished.

Depth is paid for twice. A recliner needs clearance behind it to open, and an open plan needs a walkway in front of it. Both come out of the same floor. A group that reclines fully but leaves a 40 cm gap to the dining chairs will be returned as unusable in exactly the room it was bought for, which is why the recline geometry, not the seat width, is usually the first thing we are asked to confirm.

What the layout has to solve

A sectional recliner group in this category is normally assembled from a small number of modules rather than bought as one fixed shape. The combinations we build most are 3+2+1, 3+2, 3+1+1, 3+2 with a console in the middle, and a true sectional with a corner and a chaise. The differences that matter to a buyer:

  • Corner and return. An L-shaped return is what makes an open plan work; a straight three-seat plus two singles is what fills a wall. The same model often supports both, but the module count changes, and so does the carton count.
  • Console and cup holders. A console between two seats turns the middle of the group into the shared surface: cup holders, sometimes a lidded storage well. It costs one seating position, so buyers who quote "seats six" need to know the console version seats five.
  • Motion mix. All-power groups suit a showroom where every seat has to demonstrate; a mix of power and manual keeps the cost and the wiring down while still giving the end seats the recline that sells the set. Both are built on the same frame.
  • Cover. Leather-look air leather for markets that sell on wipe-clean and sheen, tech fabric for markets that sell on warmth and texture. The same group is offered in both, so a range can be split without a second tooling set.

How buyers usually choose

Six decisions come up in almost every enquiry for this category, and they are usually made in this order.

1. Start from the longest sightline, not the seat count. Measure the wall or the open edge the group will sit against, subtract the walkway, and let the module count fall out of what is left. Buyers who start from "we need six seats" end up with a group that blocks the room.

2. Decide whether the console is in the middle row. It is the one choice that changes both the seating count and the carton list, and it is the hardest to change after the order is placed.

3. Confirm the recline clearance before the fabric. Wall-hugger or standard motion changes how far the group has to stand off the wall. If the room has a fixed island or dining table behind the sofa, this is the constraint that decides the model.

4. Fix the hand of the corner. Left-hand and right-hand returns are not interchangeable once the group is in a room, and a container loaded with the wrong hand is a whole order of returns. Send the room plan or a photo of the wall with the enquiry.

5. Split the cover by market, not by model. Keeping one frame and two covers gives a range two price points and one spare-parts story.

6. Count the cartons, not just the sets. A 3+2+1 is three cartons minimum and often more once the console and the corner are counted. That number drives freight and warehouse space, and it is the figure buyers ask for second, after the price.

Models that fit

These are the sectional groups on our current line that come up most often for open-plan living and home entertainment areas. All six are in production and all six are listed on the site.

Configuration is quoted per model: 3+2+1, 3+2, 3+1+1, 3+2 with console, or a sectional with corner and chaise. The same frames are built for both the living-room and the entertainment brief — the difference is usually the console, the chaise and whether the audio is built in.

What we do not put on this page

Two numbers buyers ask for are not on this page on purpose. Per-model dimensional sheets are still being consolidated across the sectional range, and we would rather send measured drawings against your sample than publish figures we have not signed off. Container loading per configuration depends on how the modules and the console are packed, so it is quoted against the exact combination on your enquiry rather than published as a headline number. Ask for both and you will get the figures for the configuration you are actually buying.

On certification we keep to what we hold. Our supplier admission standard is ISO 9001, and core components such as motors and mechanisms carry CE, UL, BSCI or SGS reports. Wooden parts use FSC-certified timber, and REACH, RoHS and CE alignment is confirmed per target market. Where a market needs a specific flammability standard, raise it at enquiry and we will confirm what can be provided. We do not print certificate numbers for individual models on this page.

What an order looks like

A sample is quoted separately and takes 15–25 days after the details are confirmed. Production runs start at one 40HQ container, one model in up to two colours as the default recommendation. Bulk lead time is 30–45 days, with 25 days possible on a rush basis depending on volume and season.

The group is built on a high-strength wood frame or a metal frame with S-spring packs and layered filling — foam, fibre and feather — cut to an ergonomic profile. Foam is D28, D30 or D35 virgin foam throughout, with no powdered filler. Standard recliners are rated 120–150 kg. Warranty is two years on the complete unit, five years on the wooden frame and lifetime on the steel mechanism. Metal mechanisms are cycle-tested to 25,000 operations, inside a programme of more than 150 durability procedures.

Our factory runs 50,000 m² with capacity above 8,000 sets a month, serving more than 500 retailers across 100+ export markets, building functional seating since 2007.

If the room you are fitting is a dedicated cinema rather than an open living area, read home theatre and private cinema rows instead — the seating there is specified for a fixed screen wall, not for a walkway. Buyers working across several room types usually read these next as well: apartment and small living room seating, senior living and home care lift chairs and kids room and family space chairs.

People also ask

Can one model be ordered as an L-shape and as a straight set?
Yes on most of the sectional frames above — the corner and the return are modules, so the same cover and the same mechanism serve both. What changes is the module count and the carton list, and both are quoted with the configuration.

Does the console cost a seat?
It replaces one seating position. A 3+2 with a console between the two seats seats five, not six. Tell us the seat count you are selling against and we will confirm which configuration delivers it.

How much space does the group need behind it to recline?
That depends on whether the model uses standard or wall-hugger motion, and we confirm it per model against the room plan. Send the wall dimension and the walkway you need to keep and we will tell you which models fit before you pick a cover.

Can we start with one set before committing to a container?
A sample is quoted separately and takes 15–25 days after details are confirmed. Production orders start at one 40HQ container, one model in up to two colours.

Can the console, the chaise or the audio be left off?
Yes. Console, chaise and Bluetooth are options on the frames that list them, not separate products. Removing one changes the module count and the price point, so it is worth fixing before sampling rather than after.
