OEM vs ODM Recliner Sofa: What Is the Real Difference

Oct 19,2026
Quick answer

OEM means you bring the design and we build it to your drawing. ODM means you pick from our development and we adapt the size, layout, materials and functions to your market. Both run on the same commercial basis — one 40HQ container, one model in up to two colours. Sampling is 15–25 days once details are settled; bulk production runs 30–45 days, fastest 25. A complex new ODM model adds engineering and testing time, so it starts later than a repeat model.

What is the difference in one sentence?

OEM is built to your specification. ODM is built from ours, adapted to yours.

That single line decides who carries the design work, what you have to send before a quotation, and how long the first order takes. Everything else — the frame, the foam, the mechanism, the carton — is the same production line.

What does OEM mean for a recliner sofa?

In OEM you own the design. You send a drawing, a 3D file or a mood board, and we develop the structure and the function set around it. Our structural customisation scope covers overall dimensions, seat width, chaise length, arm profile, console unit and modular layout in L, U or straight configuration — developed from your drawing and your room dimensions.

Practically, OEM buyers arrive with one of three things:

  • a technical drawing with dimensions and seat counts,
  • a 3D model or CAD file already approved by their own team,
  • a reference product plus a written brief on what must change.

The first two move fastest. The third works, but every dimension has to be re-established before sampling, which adds a round of confirmation.

What does ODM mean for a recliner sofa?

In ODM you start from a model that already exists. We release more than ten new designs a month, and you select one, then change what your market needs: cover material, colour, seat width, console, mechanism and function pack.

This is the faster path, and it is also the one most first-time importers use — because the frame geometry, the mechanism mounting and the carton are already proven. You are buying a shorter development cycle, not a lower standard.

Note the sampling line: it is the same window on both paths. What differs is how much work sits before sampling starts.

Where the line blurs

Most real projects sit between the two. Three areas pull them together.

Function packs

Manual or power mechanism, lift function, zero gravity, massage, heating, USB or Type-C charging, storage armrest, cup holder, modular build, removable covers, a cooler or a reading light — these can be specified on either path.

Materials

Top-grain leather, faux leather, fabric, suede, water-repellent fabric, woven rope, PU and EPU, in grey, brown, black or a custom colour. Material choice is usually a market decision, not a manufacturing one.

Structure

Overall size, seat width, chaise length, arm shape, console and layout can be adjusted on an ODM model just as they can on an OEM drawing. The difference is who specifies the starting point.

What to send before we can quote

Five items shorten the whole cycle:

  1. The design source — drawing, 3D file, mood board or a model number from our range.
  2. Seat count and layout — 3+2+1, 3+1, a straight run or a modular L / U.
  3. Function list — mechanism type and which smart features are in scope.
  4. Material and colour — including how many colours the container will carry.
  5. Destination market — it decides which test and compliance route applies.

Send these and the quotation carries a real specification instead of a range.

How design ownership is protected

On OEM work the drawing and the sample belong to you. We develop from your sketch, 3D file or mood board, keep drawings and samples confidential, and sign an NDA where the buyer requires one. That is a documented process, not a verbal promise — ask for it at the brief stage, before sampling.

MOQ and lead time on both paths

The commercial basis does not change: minimum one 40HQ container, quoted as one model in up to two colours. Sampling runs 15–25 days once details are confirmed. Bulk production runs 30–45 days, fastest 25, and stock quick-run models move in 15 days, fastest 10.

A new ODM model with complex functions needs extra engineering and testing time before it can enter that window. Plan the launch date backwards from the retail season, not from the sample approval.

How does the OEM/ODM and private label service work here?

The OEM, ODM and private label FAQ sets out the three service models: OEM/ODM customisation, brand wholesale and regional agency.

Can you handle OEM/ODM and protect our design?

Yes — development starts from your sketch, 3D file or mood board, and drawings and samples stay confidential. The design protection FAQ covers the working process.

What customisation options exist for materials and colours?

The materials and colours FAQ lists the cover options and how colour splits work inside one container.

The short version: OEM is your design built here, ODM is our design adapted for you. Same container basis, same 15–25 day sampling window, different amount of engineering before it starts.
